Michigan Boat Insurance

Aside from being called the Great Lakes State, Michigan has over 11,000 inland lakes and about 120 major rivers. This gives many boaters a way to escape the stresses of everyday life and get out on the open water with friends and family.

In order to get out and enjoy these pleasures, one of the things you’re responsible for is making sure your boat is properly insured. This is important for a number of reasons including to protect against substantial injury to others or heavy property damage.

Sometimes people may make changes to their homeowners policy to try and cover the liability of a watercraft. We suggest that a separate policy is a smarter way to do this because it helps offer broader coverage to protect your assets. Plus, many types of watercraft don’t qualify for coverage under a standard homeowners policy.

Every watercraft policy will vary in coverage but a good boat owner will be sure to focus on

  • Property coverage on boats, motors, equipment and trailers - this helps to cover the cost to replace or repair these when they’re damaged by a covered event. You can adjust your deductibles to what you feel you can comfortably absorb if a loss does occur.
  • Liability Coverage insures you for your legal obligations.  This could be for lawsuits and other related costs that may arise from a boating accident. We recommend that Michigan boat owners purchase limits high enough to handle the potentially serious injuries and loss of earnings a victim or victims may sustain. This is also another reason to consider a Personal Umbrella policy.
  • Uninsured Boater Coverage protects you when an accident occurs that was caused by an uninsured boat operator who has no other financial source to handle the loss.  Again, we encourage boat owners to to select the same limit for this coverage as your liability limits.

Boat Insurance Done Right

  • Coverage for Mechanical Breakdowns - You have heard it before, insurance never covers common wear and tear or mechanical breakdowns. With the right coverage on your boat insurance policy, we'll repair or replace the lower unit of an outboard motor, or upper and lower units of an inboard/outboard motor if you have a breakdown - even if it's caused by wear and tear.
  • Towing on the Water - We'll cover towing, fuel delivery, soft ungroundings and jump starts if you boat breaks down on the water.
  • Total Loss Replacement for a brand new boat - You can purchase this coverage if your boat is no more than 1 model year old.  If it is totaled within 5 model years, you will either get a new one or the amount you originally paid - your choice.  If you're outside of the 5 years, you get the original purchase price you paid. (No depreciation or estimations)
  • Fuel Spill pays for the cost of cleaning up a fuel spill, even if your boat sinks.
  • Wreckage Removal pays for the cost to remove your boat from the water if your boat sinks.
  • Fishing Equipment Coverage
  • Water Sports Coverage
  • Trailer Coverage includes physical damage, Roadside Assistance and
  • Trip Interruption - if your trailer or tow vehicle breaks down more than 100 miles from home, up to $500 for food, hotel and other transportation costs.
