DIFS Warns About Possible Scammers During M.C.C.A Refund Period

The Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) urges Michigan drivers to keep on the lookout for imposters pretending to be authorized personnel from the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association, or their insurance company.

It can be assumed that anytime a large sum of money is widely distributed to consumers, criminals will try to exploit the situation for their own gain. This often takes the form of phone calls from scammers acting as authorized personnel, requesting financial or other sensitive information. Since this refund is the first of its kind, many consumers are not sure what to expect. We want to remind all Michigan drivers that no action is needed on your part in order to receive the refund. As long as you had eligible coverage on 10/31/2021, your insurer will automatically issue the refund to you.

"No one will call, write or email you for information prior to disbursing the money." Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said. The method of payment disbursement varies between each insurer. Companies will either mail a refund check, or direct deposit the funds into policyholder's accounts who are set up for EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer/auto withdraw) payments. Updates on the insurance companies we partner with can be found in our previous blog post, along with other frequently asked questions about the refund. Click here to take a look.

If you receive one of these calls, you are encouraged to hang up immediately and contact your insurance carrier. Incidents can also be reported to the Michigan Attorney General's Consumer Protection Team. Click here to file an online complaint, or you can call their offices  at (877) 765-8388.
