M.C.C.A Refunds & What You Need to Know

Recently, the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA) unanimously voted to return excess funds back into the pockets of Michigan drivers like yourself. Insurance carriers will be receiving the funds directly from the MCCA on 3/9/22, and have until 5/29/22 to complete the refund process. Below are answers to the most frequently asked questions about this refund, and the process of distribution.  We will continue to post updates as more information becomes available.

WHAT TYPES OF VEHICLES ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE REFUND?

All private passenger vehicles, motorcycles, motorhomes, and commercial fleet vehicles that were  insured on 10/31/2021, and carried at least the state minimum requirement for liability coverage are eligible to receive a refund.

HOW MUCH WILL I RECEIVE?

$400/per vehicle for standard registrations. $80/vehicle for historic registrations.

WHAT IF MY VEHICLE CARRIED STORAGE COVERAGE ON 10/31/21

Unfortunately, comprehensive only/other than collision does not meet the requirements to receive the refund.

DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING TO RECEIVE THE REFUND?

No, your insurance company will disperse the refund automatically to all eligible policyholders.

HOW WILL I RECEIVE MY REFUND?

Each carrier is handling this differently. Company specific information can be found below. If you do not see your company listed, please check back. We will keep this section updated with all new information as it becomes available.

Citizens Insurance Company: Fund distribution will depend on the method of payment you are currently set up with. If you have payments auto-withdrawn from your checking or savings account (EFT) the payment will be direct deposited to the account on file. For all other methods of payment, you will receive a check by mail to your address on file.

Frankenmuth Insurance Company: Funds will be distributed by check to the mailing address on file.

Freemont Insurance Company: Funds will be distributed by check to the mailing address on file.

WHAT IF I MOVED SINCE 10/31/21?

WHAT IF I CHANGED MY INSURANCE COMPANY SINCE 10/31/21?

The insurer who had coverage in effect on 10/31/21 will be responsible for the refund.

DOES THIS APPLY TO COMMERICALLY INSURED VEHICLES TOO?

Yes, this refund applies to commercially insured vehicles. The refund amount will depend on how the vehicles are scheduled on the policy.

  • If the vehicles are individually defined by VIN or plate number, you will receive $400 per vehicle.
  • For policies that are written on a per-plate basis, such as those used by car dealerships with license plates that are moved from car to car as needed, the MCCA refund of $400 will be issued for each plate, not each vehicle.
  • For policies written on a gross-receipts basis, or any other type of policy where the individual vehicles are not specified, you will receive 135% of the applicable in-force commercial auto PIP written premium.

ARE THERE ANY VEHICLES NOT ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE THE REFUND?

  • Trailers
  • Golf carts
  • Snowmobiles
  • Dune buggies
  • ATVs
  • Extended non-owned vehicles
