FAQ

Contractors insurance, answered

What insurance do contractors need in Michigan?

Most contractors carry a mix: general liability, workers’ compensation, commercial auto, tools and equipment (inland marine), and often builders risk per project, surety or license bonds, and umbrella. The right mix depends on your trade. Coverage is subject to underwriting.

Why do I need a certificate of insurance (COI)?

General contractors and clients usually require a COI before you start work, as proof of coverage. We issue COIs quickly so you don’t lose a job waiting on paperwork.

Does general liability cover my tools and equipment?

Usually not — tools and equipment are covered under inland marine (a “tools floater”), separate from general liability. We make sure your gear is covered on the jobsite and in transit.

Do I need a license bond or surety bond?

Often. Many Michigan municipalities and project owners require license bonds or bid, performance, and payment bonds. We have access to multiple surety markets to get you bonded.

Do I need workers’ comp if I use subcontractors?

Possibly. Uninsured subs can become your responsibility, and clients often require coverage. We help you structure coverage and collect your subs’ certificates so you’re protected.
